The Boone family is of English origin. The first Boone to come to America was George Boone, who emigrated from England to Pennsylvania in 1682. George's son, Squire, was the first of the Boone family to move to Kentucky. In 1769, he built a cabin on the banks of the Kentucky River, near the present-day town of Boonesborough. Squire's son, Daniel, is the most famous member of the Boone family. He was an accomplished hunter and explorer, and is best known for his role in opening up the American West to settlement.
